The Family Department deals with a wide variety of issues that derive from the relationships that subsist between spouses, partners, parents and children. As society has evolved over the years so the nature and legal status of these relationships has changed and the law has struggled, and continues to struggle, to keep pace with all these changes. Marriage, which for centuries has been the bedrock of the family unit, has been diminishing in status and now many more couples choose to cohabit rather than undertake marriage vows. Family breakdown is widespread and many children now live in homes where there is only one parent.
The breakdown of these relationships is a tragedy for the adults and children concerned and we at Camerons Jones seek to advise and apply the law as sensitively as possible. The emphasis of the family justice system is upon the need to divert disputes between parties away from the court system and to try to find alternative means of resolving those disputes by negotiation, agreement and mediation. We are committed to that approach. |
